Golden retriever is winched to safety after being found trapped down a 65ft mine shaft two days after going missing

THIS  is the dramatic moment fire crews rescue a lucky dog who survived for TWO DAYS after falling 65ft - down a disused mine shaft.

Adventurous golden retriever Indie had gone missing during a walk - only to be found down the disused and uncapped shaft by her relieved owner two days later.

The tired and thirsty pooch was winched back to safety by firefighters and reunited with her family. Despite her traumatic ordeal, Indie was remarkably unharmed.

Truro Community Fire Station posted a video of the dramatic rescue that took place near Wheal Jane just before 5pm on Tuesday on its Facebook page.

A spokesman said: "A dog owner was reunited with her beloved golden retriever after it had been missing for two days.

"We were mobilised to an area near Wheal Jane after the owner managed to locate 'Indie' the dog in a disused and uncapped mine shaft.

"Assisted by the Rescue Tender from Tolvaddon and a Station Officer Tactical Advisor, the crews worked quickly to clear an area and establish suitable anchors for our line rescue equipment.

"Indie had fallen approximately 20 metres but appeared to be uninjured. Despite being very tired and thirsty, Indie was pleased to see a firefighter descend towards her and greeted him with excitement.

"Once Indie had been secured into the special harness, she was retrieved using a 3:1 pulley system and carefully raised above ground where she was reunited with her owner."

The spokesman said the mishap was a reminder of how dangerous mine shafts could be for dogs in the area.

They added: "Disused mine shafts are common in Cornwall and everyone should be mindful of these when out and about. They can be hidden by foliage or appear to be capped but can also be far reaching underground."
