MARJORIE Taylor Greene and Ted Cruz slammed Rep Cori Bush for "racism" after the Democrat said July 4 "celebrates white freedom."
, a member of the House of Representatives' progressive "squad," was widely slammed after
"When they say that the 4th of July is about American freedom, remember this: the freedom they’re referring to is for white people," Bush, a rep, wrote in an Independence Day tweet.
"This land is stolen land and Black people still aren’t free."
She added: "We know what our own freedom looks like. End the slavery permitted under the 13th amendment. End the War on Drugs. End police violence. End health care, housing, and education apartheid.
"WE are the experts on our own liberation. And we won’t stop until it’s won."
, the controversial, conservative Georgia representative, quoted Bush's tweet and accused her of "racism."
"Says a black woman, who is one of only 435 people in all of America currently elected to serve in Congress," Greene quipped.
"You can stop with the racism now Cori and put your race card back in your pocket. 4th of July is freedom for all from a tyrannical government. Happy Independence Day!"
also quoted Bush's tweet, and slammed it as "hateful, divisive lies."
"The Left hates America. Believe them when they tell you this," Cruz wrote.
The senator then went on to quote abolitionist Frederick Douglass and compare his "hope, optimism, passion for justice, and unifying call for America to live up to her grand ideals with the 'Squad’s' angry, hateful, consistently anti-American venom."
hit back with a follow-up tweet on Monday afternoon.
"It’s not a coincidence that the people who are saying Black people have full freedom in our country are the same ones trying to prevent teaching the truth about white supremacy in our classrooms," she wrote.
Though Bush received a lot of flack for her 4th of July tweet, many others supported her stance.
Democratic congressional candidate Shahid Buttar replied, writing, "Speak it, [Cori Bush]! It's almost as if our entire country has been brainwashed to ignore our history -- and how its worst elements continue today -- despite our self-congratulatory rhetoric."
Other prominent Democrats shared similar messages.
