Camper crushed to death in his sleep after huge tree fell on his tent in middle of the Edinburgh Fringe festival

Police confirm two men were in the tent when the tree fell last night but one was pronounced dead at the scene

A CAMPER has died after a tree fell onto his tent at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Two men were asleep in the tent when the giant tree came down on the banks of the Water of Leith in the Dean Village area of the city.

Paramedics raced to the scene at 3.30am this morning but one of the men was pronounced dead at the scene.

The other camper, 35, escaped with minor injuries.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "Police in Edinburgh were called to an area of woodlands on the south bank of the Water of Leith, accessed from Miller Row, around 3.30am on Saturday 6 August.

"A very large tree had fallen on a tent in which two men were sleeping and, sadly, one of the men was pronounced dead at the scene.

"A 35-year-old man also suffered minor injuries, but did not require medical treatment.

"Officers have consulted with the appropriate partners who are confident that the tree fell as a result of natural occurrences.

"We're currently working to trace the deceased's next of kin, and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."

The 24-day Fringe festival kicked off yesterday as thousands descended on the Scottish capital to watch the world's largest arts event.

More than 50,000 acts are expected to perform at 313 venues during the event.
