Dog owners warned to watch out for potentially deadly adders in warm weather
DOG owners are being warned to watch out for potentially deadly adders in the heatwave.
The UK’s only venomous snake is already more likely to strike in normal summertime, when 85 per cent of pet bites occur.
Now they will be coming out to sunbathe — and can bite if disturbed.
The Kennel Club’s Nick Sutton said: “Adders hibernate over winter and emerge in spring.
“They can be found basking in the sun, and inquisitive dogs are often bitten around the face, muzzle and front paws.
“So it’s crucial owners are aware of their surroundings when out.”
Signs a pet has been bitten include a small puncture wound, swelling, bruising, a high temperature and lameness.
Experts advise taking a dog which has been bitten to a vet immediately.
Bites are usually of little danger to people.
