RORY McILROY has been taunted by an Irish Olympic boxer who took a selfie with his tennis star ex in Rio.

Paddy Barnes, 29, tweeted a picture of himself with Caroline Wozniacki, 26, with the caption: “Hey @CaroWozniacki I think we make a great couple, what ya think @McIlroyRory.”

But McIlroy took the boxer's jab on the chin.

He tweeted Barnes and another Irish boxer Michael Conlan - who had retweeted his compatriot's taunt - saying: "@paddyb_ireland @mickconlan11 good luck lads! If your boxing is as good as your tweeting it should be 2 guaranteed golds!!"

McIlroy and Wozniacki – who were engaged to be married – dramatically broke up in May 2014.

And the sensational split came just days after they had sent out the invitations to their wedding.

The golf ace revealed at the time: “The wedding invitations issued…made me realise that I wasn't ready for all that marriage entails.

“I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we've had.

“I will not be saying anything more about our relationship in any setting.”

But McIlroy, 27, appears to have gotten over his fear of commitment, getting engaged to new girlfriend Erica Stoll last December.

And he recently revealing he was thinking of starting a family with his latest fiancée.

In fact, the Irish sportsman appears to have pulled out of the Rio Olympics for exactly that reason – citing fears over the Zika virus, which can be sexually transmitted and causes deformities in newborns.

In a statement, he explained: “After speaking with those closest to me, I’ve come to realise my health and my family’s health come before anything else.

“Even though the risk of infection from the Zika virus is considered low, it is a risk nonetheless and a risk I am unwilling to take.

“I trust the Irish people will understand my decision.”

The decision meant McIlroy wasn’t in Rio to see Barnes cosying up to his ex Caroline, who carried the flag for her native Denmark in the opening ceremony

The tennis star still hasn't responded to Barnes’s cheeky tweet.

But with Wozniacki rumoured to be dating American basketball player David Lee, she looks unlikely to be interested in a relationship with the boxer.

It was worth a try though.
