AIRPORT LOCKDOWN

Turkish officials deny reports Turkey’s Ataturk Airport is closed due to security alert

Claims circulating on social media of a massive lockdown described by officials as a "hoax"

TURKISH officials have denied reports circulating on social media that Istanbul's Ataturk Airport has closed due to a security alert.

It was reported all entrances and exits were closed and passengers couldn't enter or exit the site.

Officials, however, are denying this is the case.

The Governor of Istanbul Province tweeted that such reports were "unfounded" and that flights were continuing as normal.

His office also released a statement labelling the claims a "hoax".

The airport was the target of an ISIS terror attack on June 28, during which three attackers killed 45 people.

They used assault rifles and suicide vests to carry out the attack and were believed to be nationals originally from Russia and central Asia.

Ataturk Airport was also briefly held by army rebels during the group's unsuccessful attempted coup last month.
