A MAN has died after being caught in fire that engulfed a London nightclub yesterday.
Police confirmed a 28-year-old man, who was rushed to hospital in a critical condition, has since passed away.
Next of kin have been informed but formal identification is yet to take place.
Fourteen people have been arrested on suspicion of arson after around 100 firefighters were called to tackle the blaze.
The air ambulance was on the scene as thick, black smoke could be seen for miles across the city as the fire raged close to a recycling yard and industrial units.
London Fire Brigade said it received the first of more than 50 emergency calls from members of the public at 11.43am.
Fire engines from nine stations across the capital attended.
London Ambulance Service paramedics were also at Studio 338, which is close to the busy Blackwall Tunnel and the O2.
It is understood as least one person is being treated for burns by medics.
The fire has already closed roads nearby due to smoke travelling across the carriageways.
A London Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “We were called at 11.58am to reports of a fire at an address on Tunnel Avenue, SE10.
“We sent a single responder in a car, an ambulance crew, our hazardous area response team, two incident response officers and London’s Air Ambulance to the scene.
“We treated one patient at the scene for burns. They were taken to hospital by London’s air ambulance.
“We remain on the scene.”
A spokesman for the fire service said: "Fifteen fire engines and around 100 firefighters and officers are at the scene of a large fire on Tunnel Avenue in Greenwich, SE10. The fire is affecting a recycling yard, some industrial units and a pub.
"The Brigade received the first of over 50 emergency calls at 1143."
"Fire engines have come from the following stations: East Greenwich, Greenwich, Plumstead, Eltham, Deptford, Lewisham, Poplar, Whitechapel, and Bethnal Green.
"The London Ambulance Service are on the scene."
They confirmed the fire is affecting the ground and first floor of nightclub Studio 338 and an industrial warehouse is completely alight.
A scrap paper processing yard containing a number of outbuildings is also affected by the fire, along with around 40 pallets of paper.
Some gas cylinders are involved in the fire and as cylinders can explode when exposed to heat a safety cordon has been set up.
The spokesman added: "Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus rescued a man who has been taken to hospital by ambulance. This is a large fire and the smoke could be seen from across London, meaning we received a large number of emergency calls. Firefighters will be at the scene for the rest of the day, and possibly into the evening."
A spokesman for London’s Air Ambulance said: “Our advanced trauma team was dispatched by the London Ambulance Service at 12.10 to reports of a fire in the Greenwich area. London’s Air Ambulance has flown one person to a nearby major trauma hospital.”
Images shared across social media show a plume of black smoke which can been seen from across the capital.
Pictures of flames raging behind the Ibiza-style nightclub Studio 338 have also been widely posted.
Transport for London has also tweeted to say Millennium Way and Boord Street have been closed because of "possible smoke across the carriageway".
