Young woman, 25, who died in police chase after a couple ‘tried to fly a drone over Wandsworth prison’

THE woman killed in a high-speed police chase after a drone was seen flying towards Wandsworth Prison has been pictured for the first time.

Acacia Smith, 25, known to friends as "Caysha", worked as a nanny before the car she was a passenger in crashed into a wall near Wandsworth Bridge, west London.

A colleague said: "She had an extremely lovely personality.

"She loved kids more than anything.

"So sad to hear how soon she's gone. She had an amazing life ahead of her."

Friends have paid tribute to the 25-year-old, who lived in the Acton area, on Facebook.

Kamara Rattrey wrote: "I regret to inform everyone but in the early hours of this morning Acacia was involved in a car accident and sadly passed away.

"Her mother has asked me to inform everyone via Facebook as it was felt that this would be the easiest way to inform everyone.

"However she would like for at least the next couple of days for everyone to respect the family's privacy and give them their space."

In another post, she wrote: "We had so many plans for our future. It was supposed to be me an you until the end growing old together.

"I'm so angry that our time together has been cut short."

A police chase was sparked at 3am on Tuesday when a drone was being flown near the grounds of Wandsworth Prison, west London.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene after the collision.

The driver, a man in his 20s, was taken to a west London hospital in a "critical condition" where he remains.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash which is being investigated by the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

Scotland Yard has said it is unable to comment on whether the police car had been pursuing the couple at speed.

They added no arrests have been made so far.

Drones have been flown into prisons at an increasing rate in order to smuggle drugs and other contraband.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission is investigating the fatal crash, because a police car was following the vehicle just before the smash.

Ms Smith's Facebook page revealed a fascination of cannabis with repeated messages about the Class B on her profile.

A Met Police spokesman said: “At approximately 3.04am, police were called to Groom Crescent near Wandsworth Prison following reports of a drone being flown near the prison grounds.

“Officers arrived and a car was seen to leave the scene.

"Officers followed the vehicle and at 3.10am it was seen to have been involved in a collision in Ashcombe Street at the junction of Wandsworth Bridge Road.

"However, we continually review our departmental policies and we will ensure that our preoperative documentation for patients is as clear as possible.

“At this stage, it is believed no other vehicle was involved the collision. The London Ambulance Service and London Fire Brigade attended."

Police are having to vigilant about drones being used to carry drugs or other contraband into prisons.

A watchdog has warned the the remote-controlled devices are being used to smuggle things into Pentonville prison in London.
