Cash-strapped cops want volunteers to drive officers between stations and public meetings

A CASH-strapped police force is appealing for two volunteers to drive officers to public meetings and between stations.

The move by Devon and Cornwall Police is designed to cut costs and help officers avoid parking problems.

Volunteers are only paid expenses but get to use force pool cars and are trained in how to cope with a breakdown or accident.

New applicants face strict vetting and driving assessments.

The weekday-only shifts are between two and four hours long and end not later than 6pm.

The force tweeted that volunteers would assist with “a wide range of other matters”.

Devon and Cornwall Police need to fill the gap left by two previous volunteers leaving.

A spokesman said: “Police volunteers are not replacing roles, but add value and provide a more accessible and cost-effective service. They do not wear a uniform.”

It comes after the same force asked residents in Bodmin to volunteer to help maintain law and order.
