Brighton and Hove Albion among almost 200 employers publicly named who owe workers more than £450,000 by failing to pay the minimum wage

CHAMPIONSHIP football club Brighton and Hove Albion are amongst 200 employers named and shamed for failing to pay workers the national minimum wage.

Amongst them are recruitment agencies, nurseries, builders and even brewing giant Greene King.

The worst offender in the latest batch of firms was a restaurant in south London, which owes £99,541.98 to 30 workers.

It was revealed in the list published by the Government this morning, the biggest ever of its kind, which showed more than £466,000 was owed in arrears by employers.

As well as Brighton – who owed £2,861.64 to one worker - another football club, Blackpool, was also publicly named for not paying the legal minimum rate to an employee.

Business minister Margot James said: "This Government is determined to build an economy that works for everyone, not just the privileged few.

"That means making sure everyone gets paid the wages they are owed - including our new, higher, national living wage. It is not acceptable that some employers fail to pay at least the minimum wage their workers are entitled to.

"So we'll continue to crack down on those who ignore the law, including by naming and shaming them."

The living wage for workers aged 25 and over was introduced in April, giving a pay rise of more than £900 a year for someone previously working full time on the national minimum wage.

The national minimum wage still applies to workers under 25.

There have been 10 rounds of naming and shaming since 2013, with £3.5 million arrears recovered for 12,908 workers from almost 700 employers.

5. TM West Plumbing Services Ltd, Leeds, owed £12,617.76 to 2 workers
6. Mr Ronald McConnachie, trading as Bay Newsagents, Weymss Bay, Renfrewshire, owed £12,527.97 to 3 workers
7. SLW Ltd, trading as Sycamore Care Centre, Sunderland, owed £10,212.05 to 98 workers
8. Kushi Care Ltd, Leicester, owed £9,726.23 to 46 workers
9. Busy Bee Nursery (Newport-on-Tay) Ltd, trading as Little Beehive Nursery, Fife, owed £9,065.14 to 7 workers
