The horrifying crime shocked the nation when the little lad was abducted, tortured and murdered by the ten-year-old boys before being dumped on railway tracks in 1993.

The pair were jailed but are now out of prison having been given new identities by the Government.

In a heart-wrenching interview given to Channel 5 Denise and her husband Stuart have revealed they have been left "paranoid" by internet trolls.

Denise said: "I sometimes think, ‘Is it a member of their family or could it be them? Because they could easily get in touch with me.

“They’ve been told not to…but what’s to stop them writing to me on social media and pretending to be somebody else?

“It’s really scary and the thought often goes through my mind it could be one of them.”

Her husband Stuart added that they had found people setting up accounts pretending to be the murderers.

Denise revealed that any  time her boy's name appears in the press people start bombarding her with "nasty" comments with Stuart adding it gets worse around the anniversary of the crime.

The couple even told how the sick trolls award prizes for their abuse if they manage to make the papers. Stuart told: “There are actually forums and we’ve been told what they try and do between them.

“If somebody targets a parent or an individual or a charity and it makes the press, they win a prize – there’s a prize structure for it.”

Last month 20-year-old Chloe Cowan was jailed for three years for sending abuse to Denise online.

The student admitted causing serious alarm or distress after posing as James’ ghost on the internet.

Denise has previously called on Twitter to crack down on online abuse saying: “It is time Twitter made it a priority to close down trolls. They can’t just wash their hands of it.”

The Liverpool family's ordeal is revealed in a new Channel 5 show set to be shown on Thursday at 10pm titled Celeb Trolls: We’re Coming To Get You.
