The unnamed man was expected to be remanded in custody yesterday after a private court hearing.

He has not been formally charged with any crime as is customary in Spain where charges are only laid shortly before trial - but is being probed on suspicion of a double attempted murder.

One of his alleged victims, a 45-year-old Brit, was left fighting for his life after being knifed repeatedly in the resort of Los Cristianos on July 24.

The second victim, a 32-year-old man from Birmingham, was less seriously injured.

Detectives said early on they were hunting a man seen fleeing the scene in a red Audi with UK number plates.

Officers were said to be be probing the theory the knifing was related to a settling of scores, although they have not made any official statement about the motive behind the crime.

The scene of the stabbing - San Francisco Avenue - is only a short drive from the spot outside a bar in the Torviscas area of popular Adele Costa where a 53-year-old Brit died after a drunken fight with a father and son from the UK.

They were subsequently questioned in court by a judge probing them on suspicion of manslaughter.

The victim died after smashing his head on the pavement following a violent altercation between the three men at the start of May.

It is not know if the pair held over the killing are in custody or have been released on bail.
