Who is Liz Truss’s husband Hugh O’Leary?

LIZ TRUSS became the shortest-serving Prime Minister in UK history when she stepped down after just 44 days in charge.

The politician, who continues to serve as an MP and has branched into speaking engagements, has been supported by husband Hugh O'Leary throughout her career.

Who is Liz Truss's husband Hugh O'Leary?

Hugh O'Leary is the husband of Liz Truss and has been in a relationship with the former PM for over two decades.

Like his wife, O'Leary is a qualified accountant and he has also attempted to make his way into politics.

In 2002 he unsuccessfully stood as a Tory candidate in the local council elections, according to , but has continued to play a role in the party and often canvasses with the Tories in Greenwich.

O'Leary is thought to be a similar age to his wife, who was born in 1975, but his age and birth date are not available publicly.

He attended the London School of Economics and met his future wife at the 1997 Tory Party Conference.

Speaking about their first date, Truss once said: "I invited him ice skating and he sprained his ankle."

When did Liz Truss and Hugh O'Leary get married?

Truss and O'Leary married just three years after they met, in 2000.

In 2006, Truss' affair with former Tory MP Mark Field was made public and, while Truss and O'Leary's marriage survived, Field's broke down the same year.

The couple have remained private about that tough time.

Truss has since said in an interview that she is "really happily married" and on Valentine's Day 2019 she posted a picture of herself with her husband on social media with the caption: "Love of my life."

In September 2022, O'Leary looked delighted as he supported his wife as she was appointed the new UK prime minister.

He has attended several high-profile events with her since, including Queen Elizabeth II's funeral and the coronation of King Charles.

Do Liz Truss and Hugh O'Leary have any children?

Truss and O'Leary have two daughters together.

Their eldest, Frances, was born in 2006 and their youngest, Liberty, followed in 2008.

Although their ages have not been publicly confirmed, their birthdays have been posted on Truss' Instagram.

In 2018, Truss posted a picture on Instagram revealing that Liberty was turning 10 and in 2020 she posted another snap confirming that Frances was turning 14.

Truss has previously spoken about her daughter Liberty's influence when it comes to her style, with the MP telling : "She introduces me to places I wouldn't think of much."

Truss also said in an interview with the BBC's in 2018 that she has to lock her daughter's phone in a box to restrict her screen time.

She said: "I'm known as the phone jailer in our household.

"I think the best method is physically locking it away."

In 2022, Truss revealed that she had enlisted her daughters help in her leadership campaign.

Speaking to the , Truss said: "My oldest daughter's working on the digital team.

"She's done a computing GCSE so she’s helping out on that. And my younger daughter was there as well, giving general political advice."
