Health worker said 'F*** I forgot to turn it on' after colleague found premature baby's cold body

A NURSE who forgot to turn on a humidifier machine to help a premature baby breathe has admitted failings over the youngster's death.

The boy, who was born 13 weeks early, had been found cold by one of Mr Wilson's colleagues.

The tragic youngster died later that day, .

A fellow nurse told a hearing in Edinburgh yesterday that she set the humidifier up, and all Wilson had to do was "turn it on".

Wilson, who has worked as a nurse for 13 years, admitted that his fitness to practice is now impaired.

He faces being struck off by the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

The nurse admits that he initially claimed he had turned the humidifier on and that someone else must have switched it off.

His representative told the hearing that Wilson was now prepared to admit he had not switched it on.

The tragic tot had been born at 27 weeks but was said to be making good progress in the incubator.

After Wilson forgot to turn his humidifier on, the baby suffered from hypothermia and multiple organ failure and died later that day.

Nurse Christine McInally told the hearing Wilson was teaching a student on the day of the baby's death so she had helped set up the equipment.

She added: "I filled the humidifier with water myself. He just had to switch it on."

Ms McInally added that when Wilson was made aware of the issue he "said a swear word, then, 'I forgot to switch it on'."

The nurse added Wilson later changed his story and claimed he had filled the humidifier.

She refused to answer when asked if she thought Wilson was a good nurse.

Robbie Wilson, for Wilson, said: "His position is that on the day, what he wrote is what he believed to be true at the time.

"This was obviously an emotional and stressful day.

"He's never been dishonest".

Wilson admitted a separate charge of saying a baby at the Southern General Maternity Hospital had been given ulcer medication when they hadn't.

The hearing continues.
