COWBOY BOOB OP CRACKDOWN

Dodgy cosmetic surgeons will be named and shamed in new efforts to increase clinical standards

Government will introduce new ratings system which will also apply to abortion clinics and drug abuse centres

COWBOY cosmetic surgeons providing services such as boob jobs will be named and shamed under new government plans.

Dodgy clinics face transparency ratings to the same standard as hospitals and GP surgeries by the health regulator.

Up to a hundred cosmetic clinics will be graded by inspectors to “end the lottery of poor practice”, according to Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt.

Patients will also be able to compare abortion clinics, drug abuse centres and eye surgery centres to avoid poor quality outlets.

Ministers will on Monday launch a consultation to expand the rating programme to up to 1,000 providers.

These services are currently inspected by the Care Quality Commission but are not given a rating.

They are set to be given one of four ratings from outstanding, good, requires improvement or inadequate.

It marks another step towards greater consumer safety following the Keogh Review in 2013 following the PIP breast implant scandal.

Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt said: “Anyone who chooses to have a cosmetic procedure should have high quality and safe care – and that’s why we have a tough regulator in place to help people make an informed decision.

“Our proposals to extend the CQC’s powers to rate more providers are an important step forward in improving standards and will help to end the lottery of poor practice in parts of the cosmetic industry.”

The CQC started rating providers including NHS Trusts and GP Practices in October 2014.
