The 95-year-old was offered the prestigious prize by Oldie Magazine, which is today being presented by the Duchess of Cornwall, 74, and Gyles Brandreth, 73.

But in a letter from Tom Laing Baker, Assistant Private Secretary to The Queen, she turned it down.

The gracious letter reads: "Thank you for your letter of 30th July, addressed to Sir Edward Young asking if The Queen would accept The Oldie of the Year award.

"Her Majesty believes you are as old as you feel, as such The Queen does not beleive she meets the relevant criteria to be able to accept, and hopes you will find a more worthy recipient.

"This message comes to you with Her Majesty's warmest best wishes."

Social media users commended The Queen on her legendary response, insisting: "This is the right mindset!"

Pauline Brammall said: "Good for her," and Lianne Warnell added: "Love it!"

Former Oldies of the Year include include David Hockney, Eileen Atkins, Stanley Baxter, Peter Blake, Glenda Jackson and Moira Stuart.
