Punter gobsmacked at ‘rip-off’ £80 drinks bill – but others disagree

A DRINKER blasted “insane” prices after being hit with a bar bill for almost £80 – but not everyone was convinced by his complaint.

He posted two receipts on Twitter showing the “rip-off” cost for his small group in Belfast city centre.

The punter raged online: “A night in Belfast. Completely insane. Rip off NI.”

He was charged £33.60 on the first tab, including two glasses of sauvignon blanc for £11 each and two pints at £5.80 each.

Despite the prices, he ordered a second round.

This time he paid £46 for two cocktails, two gins and a tonic water.

Some Twitter users were shocked at the stiff drinks prices.

One lamented: “Not surprised by this. Belfast is not cheap anymore.

“I lived in London for 16 years and believe prices here on a night out are on a par with London.”

Another joked: “Dick Turpin wore a mask.”

But others pointed out he had gone boozing at the swish Seahorse bar in the city’s Grand Central Hotel.

One asked: “You went to the most expensive bar in Belfast, were you really expecting a cheap night out?”

Another said: “Wetherspoons is 200m up the street, £2.50 a pint.”

And some eagle eyed Twitter users spotted that the second receipt was from the following day.

One said: “You went back to the bar even though you knew it was expensive. Says more about you.”

The punter explained he was staying at the hotel but was still furious at the “spiralling cost of alcohol” and wanted to “sound off”.
