DOCTORS have been left baffled after they removed 40 knives from the stomach of a man who complained of casual tummy ache.
A team of five doctors conducted a five-hour long surgery to remove the blades from the patient's stomach in Amritsar, Punjab, Northern India.
Dr Jitendra Malhotra, one of the doctors who conducted the surgery, confirmed he was left astonished by the case.
He said: “ I have not seen anything like this in my entire career. This is totally mind boggling.”
Jarnail Singh, 42, swallowed the 40 knives over two months although it is still unclear why.
“It seems that the man has been swallowing the metallic knives over the last two months,” Dr Malhotra said.
However, Jarnail initially did not mention his knife-swallowing hobby and instead arrived at the hospital complaining of low appetite, weight loss and stomach pains.
Dr Malhotra added that the 42-year-old may have mental health problems.
He said: “We will be trying to ascertain if the man is mentally stable because at this stage, we are not sure how a grown up man could end up swallowing knives.
