Who was Bob Dole?

Born July 22, 1923, Dole was famously known for serving as Kansas' senator from 1969 to 1996.

He was often referred to as a Republican leader and also served three nonconsecutive years as Senate Majority Leader.

Prior to his start in politics, Dole attended Washburn University and served in World War II.

Throughout his military career, he earned two Purple Hearts as well as the Bronze Star with "V" Device for valor for his attempt to assist a downed soldier.

While in the military, Dole was seriously injured in Italy and reportedly lost most of the mobility in his right arm and experienced numbness in his left.

In 1996, Dole ran for president but eventually lost to President Bill Clinton.

What was his cause of death?

Dole passed away following a battle with stage 4 lung cancer.

";Senator Robert Joseph Dole died early this morning in his sleep. At his death, at age 98, he had served the United States of America faithfully for 79 years," his family said in a statement.

His passing was first confirmed by the Elizabeth Dole Foundation and comes just 10 months after he revealed his cancer diagnosis.

Over the years, Dole had suffered from multiple health ailments including a 1991 surgery for prostate cancer.

In 2001, he also had surgery for an abdominal aortic aneurysm and was then hospitalized again in 2005 after a fall in his home, according to .

Was Bob Dole married?

Throughout the course of his lifetime, the politician had been married twice.

In 1948, Dole first tied the knot with Phyllis Holden but after 24 years of marriage, the two parted ways.

In 1975, he then remarried Harvard Law School graduate Mary Elizabeth Alexander Hanford, 85, whom he was married to up until his death.

Hanford is known as an American politician and author who served in the Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, and George H. W. Bush presidential administrations.

Throughout the course of her career, she also served as a United States Senator for North Carolina from 2003 to 2009.

Over the years, Dole only had one daughter, Robin, 67, whom he welcomed during his first marriage.
