Kyrsten Sinema is a member of the US Senate from Arizona.
She was notably a part of the Democratic Party before switching her party affiliation to Independent in December 2022.
“I just don’t fit well into a traditional party system,” Sinema said at the time.
“I don’t expect anything to change for me,” she added. “This will just be a further affirmation of my style of working across all the political boundaries with anyone to try and get something done.”
Who is Kyrsten Sinema?
Sinema was born in Tucson, Arizona, in 1976.
She attended Brigham Young University in Utah and Arizona State University, where she also has taught before.
Sinema is a defense attorney and social worker and aims to help families in Arizona who went through the same hardships that her family did when she was a child, growing up homeless for a period of time.
In 2012, she was elected to the House of Representatives for Arizona's 9th District and maintained that position until 2019.

In 2018, Sinema became the first woman, and Democrat, in Arizona history to represent the state in the Senate.
She also made history by being the first openly bisexual member of the Senate. She was previously married to Blake Dain. The two never had children.
Is Kyrsten Sinema running for re-election in Arizona?
On March 5, 2024, Sinema revealed she would not be running for re-election.
“Because I choose civility, understanding, listening, working together to get stuff done, I will leave the Senate at the end of this year,” she posted on her X account.
“Compromise is a dirty word. We’ve arrived at that crossroad, and we chose anger and division. I believe in my approach, but it’s not what America wants right now,” Sinema added.
