Young woman, 21, caused horror road smash while driving with one hand and inhaling hippy crack with the other
Four injured after Jordanna Best's car careered to the wrong side of the road on a blind bend
A 21-year-old woman has been jailed for causing a horrific head-on collision while inhaling hippy crack at the wheel of her car.
Jordanna Best, 21, had an inflated balloon of nitrous oxide in her mouth as she careered onto the wrong side of the road, while driving round a blind bend, and ploughed into an oncoming van.
Two passengers in her Ford Ka, Harrison Oldfield and Lauren Best, were seriously injured in the impact.
Lauren suffered a fractured vertebra and injuries to her liver whilst Harrison broke ribs. The van driver suffered cuts and bruises.
Best herself was also injured, suffering fractured ribs and a collapsed lung.
The incident occurred at 11.15pm on March 10 near Manchester United's training ground at Carrington.
Firefighters had to use cutting equipment to free one of the injured people from the car during a 90 minute rescue operation.
Today Best, from Partington, near Manchester, was convicted of two charges of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and was jailed for 20 months.
She was also disqualified from driving for two years and ten months and must take an extended re-test before she her licence is handed back.
David Graham, prosecuting, said: "Jordanna Best has today been sentenced for causing serious and life threatening injuries to her two passengers due to driving her car dangerously.
"She took a series of risks that night, putting other road users as well as her passengers at serious risk of harm with disastrous consequences.
"She has accepted driving her car whilst inhaling nitrous oxide; not only would this have affected her ability to drive safely, it meant she had to drive with only one hand on the steering wheel, whilst the balloon she inhaled from would also have obscured her view through the windscreen."
Mr Graham continued: ''She overtook another car before drifting again over the solid white lines into the path of oncoming traffic, whilst on a blind bend. The van driver she collided with did not stand a chance of avoiding the collision.
"As a direct result of her reckless actions, her two passengers were serious injured, the van driver was injured, plus she also received fractured ribs and a collapsed lung. Her actions alone were responsible for this serious collision that risked the lives of those involved.
"This case serves as an example of the consequences of dangerous driving. The CPS and Police are dedicated to bringing to justice those who do not drive safely on our roads."
