He is most notably remembered for his turbulent marriage and scandalous divorce from Margaret Campbell in 1963.

Born in Paris, he was the son of Douglas Walter Campbell and his wife, Aimee Marie Suzanne Lawrence.

In 1949, when he was 46, he inherited the dukedom from his first cousin once removed, Niall Diarmid Campbell, 10th Duke of Argyll.
