The terrifying ordeal only ended when the 25-year-old, who threatened to stab the woman, realised she was not who he had meant to attack, telling her that he had thought she was his ex-girlfriend.

In harrowing footage of the attack, the violent attacker can be seen grabbing his victim while at the Bury town centre, dragging her into a side street off of Manchester Road about 4.45am on December 21 last year.

The young man can then be seen pushing her to the ground, with the court hearing he told her that "if she didn't shut up, he would stab her".

The woman desperately pleaded with Williams to let her go and take her handbag, telling him that she had a five-year-old son.

Police said the man's demeanour only changed when he realised she was not his ex.

He then sat on the floor next to the woman and smoked a cigarette before threatening her again.

It was only when an emergency vehicle sped past that Williams became spooked and ran from the scene.

He was later charged after police identified him using DNA on a cigarette left at the scene.

He has now been sentenced to four years and eight months after appearing at the Bolton Crown Court.

Detective Constable Donna Haldane of GMP’s Bury borough said: "Williams is a dangerous man who put someone’s life at risk with threats and violence.

"I am pleased he is now safely behind bars, preventing him from endangering any further lives."
