MONTEZUMA'S REVENGE

Hundreds of Brit tourists have dream Cancun breaks ruined by Mexico food poisoning outbreak

More than 300 holiday-goers have been left vomiting and suffering diarrhoea after eating contaminated food

MORE than 300 tourists have been struck down with a crippling food poisoning bug after travelling to Mexico.

The outbreak, which has involved 24 luxury hotel complexes mostly in the Riviera Maya coast area of Mexico near Cancun, has meant hundreds of tourists have been left vomiting and suffering diarrhoea and severe stomach cramps.

The impacted resorts include the Thomson run four star Catalonia Riviera Maya Resort & Spa, Sensatori Resort Mexico and Hotel Royalton Riviera Cancun with victims as young as 12-years-old.

Simpson Millar solicitors head of holiday claims Nick Harris said: "This outbreak is very concerning. People are coming to us every hour complaining of sickness.

"Many have been ill for over a week and have only just been properly diagnosed with the bug. They have been suffering severe diarrhoea and stomach cramps. I now fear these recent warning notices may be too little too late. The bug has already spread out of control in the resort."

So far, about 157 Scottish tourists have been struck down by the bug, .

Health Protection Scotland has now warned travellers to be wary of what they eat while travelling.

Public Health England has warned that the bug may have been spread by tainted food supplies.

The food and water was contaminated by it coming into contact with human faeces.

The food poisoning is believed to have been associated with poor food hygiene

Most of the resorts implicated in the food poisoning drama offer all-inclusive gourmet dining.

It is the second time the area has been plagued by food poisoning concerns with previous outbreaks linked to fresh food like raspberries, basil and lettuce.

In a statement released by Simpson Millar, the lawfirm said: "If you have suffered symptoms such as these for more than 24 hours and are returning home ill, it's imperative that you speak to your GP, as your condition may be contagious and could prove to be harmful to anyone who has close contact with you, particularly the elderly or very young children."
