Stunned couple find massive 8ft long SWORDFISH washed up on UK beach as they walked their dog
The huge fish, spotted on a Pembrokeshire beach, is estimated to weigh up to 22lbs
A MAMMOTH swordfish measuring more than 8ft has been found washed up on a Welsh beach.
The gigantic fish, estimated to weigh up to 200lbs, was found lying on the sand on Freshwater East, Pembrokeshire.
John and Helen Swancott were taking an early morning stroll along the water’s edge when they came across the giant fish.
John said: “I couldn’t believe there was a swordfish in our waters, it was amazing.
“It must be about 8ft long and weigh between 150 and 200lbs.
“I should have stood there with a fishing rod and blagged it as the biggest fish caught in Fresh East this century and had a photo taken – I would have been pinched by all the local fishing clubs.”
The couple’s casual beach stroll was interrupted when their rescue dog ran into the surf.
The couple, who work together at Greenhill School in Tenby, said they were shocked by the find.
Amateur artist Helen, who took a photo next to the huge fish to show its size, said she would have loved to use the fish for one of her artistic creations.
The school receptionist
Milford Haven Coastguard Ieuan Williams said the fish was not a creature that was commonly seen in the area.
Swordfish are typically found in tropical parts of the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans.
In 2008, a swordfish washed up on a beach at Barry, in the Vale of Glamorgan.
