His family later discovered his wallet, keys and phone had been stolen - and his mobile used to rack-up a massive bill on premium rate international lines.

Sister-in-law Jacqui Feehan, 54, blasted the yobs as "worse than animals" and said: "He was either robbed, which brought on the heart attack, or he was robbed as he lay dying.

"Either way, while he lay dying and was being given CPR his phone was being used, and then again 24 hours after he was dead. It's horrendous.

"He wasn't just my brother-in-law, he was my friend. He was a beautiful person. He was a hardworking lovely family man. We are all in bits. We just can't get our heads around."

Widow Kim Collins, 51, added: "This was just so cruel. Everybody I've spoken to says what a gentle, kind man he was. He would have done anything for anybody. They robbed him of everything he owned and left him for dead."

The dad-of-three - due to become a grandfather for the third time - was found in Newham, east London, a mile from the Golden Fleece pub, on August 19.

It was in the opposite direction to his home in Manor Park. There were no physical signs he had been attacked, and he died in nearby Whipps Cross Hospital.

The family has launched a leaflet campaign to find witnesses or CCTV footage that might give clues to his final moments.

Det Con Raf Patel of Newham CID said: "I need to establish the circumstances which led to this man being found collapsed. At some point that day the man's possessions have gone missing."
