Tragic gran whose arm was ripped off when she got it trapped in window of a car
Surgeons have been unable to reattach Maggie Hayes' arm after horrific freak accident that saw right limb severed
A GRANDMA whose arm was torn off in a horrific accident has undergone four operations, but medics haven’t been able to reattach the limb.
Maggie Hayes, 78, suffered the life-changing injury when her right arm was severed as she attempted to help a neighbour last month.
The tragic cancer survivor had been trying to shut a car window, but the car shot forward, tearing her arm off at the elbow.
Though she was swiftly airlifted to hospital in hopes that surgeons would be able to reattach her arm, they have not been successful in their attempts.
Speaking on her friend’s case, Clare Butler, 50, said: "She is somebody who will do anything for everyone.
"Maggie will always support you in everything you do. I class her as my second mum. She has a heart of gold.
"Although Maggie is 5ft 8in she only weighs around eight stone.
"When you have a car, a wall, a person, something has got to give and unfortunately her arm was very badly injured."
The bizarre accident occurred on August 27 when Maggie tried to help a neighbour struggling to close the windows of his wife’s Peugeot Partner Tepee.
It is believed the car, which was in gear, moved forward suddenly.
Locals in the cul-de-sac in Cornwall rushed to help the pensioner immediately after the incident occurred, covering her in a blanket and attempting to stem the flow of blood gushing from her severed limb.
The car was removed from the scene for examination by officials, and Maggie was airlifted to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, Devon.
Maggie’s friend Clare continued: "She has survived cancer and at the end if it she is a fighter and will not let anything get her down.
"She's a strong character - an incredible lady who is an inspiration."
