Pensioner aged 101 who was violently mugged outside her London home as she came home from a prayer meeting

Alexteen Roberts is now scared to return to her Tottenham home

An INDEPENDENT 101-year-old woman who was violently mugged outside her home has said she is now "afraid" - and branded her attacker a "wicked man".

Alexteen Roberts was shoved to the ground and punched in the ribs on the way home from a prayer meeting - and her handbag, containing £300, was stolen in broad daylight.

The horrific attack, on August 23, occurred after she bravely confronted a man who claimed he was there to do electrical work.

Her grandson, 31-year-old Ashley Aitcheson, chased the attacker in his boxer shorts and bare feet as he fled following the robbery in Tottenham, north London - but he managed to escape as he "knew all the little side streets".

Mrs Roberts, whose 101st birthday was on Wednesday, said: "I'm a bit shaky. When I'm coming in the house now I'm afraid because of this wicked man."

Meanwhile, granddaughter Jacqueline McIntosh said she complained to police because she felt the investigation had not progressed - and was told by a detective the case had "slipped through the net".

The family now have to take shifts to be in the house with her grandmother as "being attacked like that changes things".

She explained Mrs Roberts, a Seventh-day Adventist, did her own shopping and travelled around the city herself, adding: "She's become a bit unsteady now. A lot of other old people live in this area and they have become concerned."

Detective Chief Inspector Luke Marks said: "This was a despicable attack on a very elderly lady who lived independently and is now fearful to return home.

"At 100 years old she had the sense and foresight to dismiss the suspect when he tried to con her into unnecessary electrical work - but he then decided to mug her instead.

"She is naturally extremely distressed and shaken by what happened and we are appealing for help to catch his man before he targets someone else."

The attack happened at 5pm in Sherboro Road and the victim was taken to hospital as a precaution - but luckily she escaped injury.

The man, who had claimed he was there "to do the electrics", was last seen heading north on to the nearby A10 High Road towards Seven Sisters Road.

Police said he was described as white and aged around 35 years old, while grandson Ashley said the man looked like "a drunk" with baggy clothes and a beard.
