The invasion began in the early hours soon after Putin announced his decision in an address to his nation.

The Kremlin strongman has been massing a force of 200,000 troops and 500 planes on the border with Ukraine and has kept the world guessing as to when he would make his move.

But in the past few weeks there have clues that have predicted the exact date with chilling accuracy.

Back on December, Russian MP Vladimir Zhirinovsky gave a speech to the country’s Parliament.

The 75-year-old leader of the Liberal Democratic Party, told MPs: “You will feel it at 4am on 22 February. I'd like 2022 to be peaceful. But I love the truth.”

Mr Zhirinovksy, who heads the KGB-founded party and has been dubbed the Kremlin’s jester continued: “It won't be peaceful.

"It will be a year when Russia once again becomes great.”

Another clue, which popped up this week, saw the logo on the Russian Foreign Ministry add “22.02.22” to its Twitter logo.

Those with a knowledge of recent Russian history could also have seen the clues in the date.

February 22 is the anniversary of the date on which popular protests in Ukraine – known as the Maidan Revolution - drove out its pro-Moscow President Viktor Yanukovych and toppled his regime.

The events of that time are widely seen as setting Russian and Ukraine on a collision course.

Ukraine was aligned with Russia as part of the Soviet Union until its collapse in 1991, following which it became an independent state.

Both nations remained closely tied - but Ukraine gradually began to distance itself, seeking deeper ties with the West.

The open conflict was triggered by the 2014 revolution - when an uprising overthrew Viktor Yanukovych.

Putin's forces reacted by annexing the region of Crimea from Ukraine - a move which was widely condemned by the West.

February 22 is also a significant day in the tumultuous history of Russia itself.

On that day strikes began in Russia that led to a revolution that overthrew Tsar Alexander II.

The Tsar had ordered the army to suppress the rioting by force but troops in the city refused and they mutinied and joined the protesters.

Having lost the support of the army and under the advice of his army chiefs and ministers, the Tsar abdicated.
