Evans was serving at Whittington Barracks, near where the murder happened.
He spoke to police after seeing a girl's face in his dreams and asked to see a photo of her.
They dismissed him initially but after questioning him began to believe he was the killer.
According to police he recalled information only the killer could have known which led to his sentencing.
He retracted his confession before the trial and was given a truth drug, which is now considered inadmissible in court.
He was sentenced to life in prison in 1973, due to his confession.
When was Andrew Evans released from prison?
In 1994, Evans began campaigning for his release, which he was granted three years later.
The evidence used to convict him was no longer admissible in the court and there was nothing tying him to the murder other than his confession.
The truth drug used has been widely discredited as it can give false memories.
After 25 years behind bars, Evans was released as a free man, receiving his compensation at the age of 45.
Who killed Judith Roberts?
The true killer of Judith has never been confirmed, although it is widely believed she was a victim of the Yorkshire Ripper.
Peter Sutcliffe would often bludgeon his victims with a blunt object, which fit Judith's manner of death.
A man fitting Sutcliffe's description - long sideburns and curly hair - was seen in the area at the time of the murder.
The suspect was wearing work clothes and Wellington boots, which Sutcliffe had admitted to wearing while he looked for victims.
