PRESIDENT Joe Biden made a gaffe Tuesday night during his State of the Union address when he said Iranians when referring to Ukrainians.

Biden's address comes just days after Vladimir Putin and Russia's invasion of Ukraine, to which the president responded by imposing strict sanctions, and he is expected to discuss the ongoing dispute.

“Putin may circle Kyiv with tanks, but he’ll never gain the hearts and souls of the Iranian people,” said Biden.

The mistake was quickly mentioned on social media by journalists and political commentators.

“Did Biden say the Iranian people?” wrote Fox News host Laura Ingraham

Joe Biden just said Putin will never weaken the will of the Iranian people. He meant the Ukrainian people. Good lord.” said political commentator Clay Travis.

Meanwhile, others, such as journalist Josh Rogin didn’t want people to become distracted by the mistake. “Yes, Biden said Iranian when he met Ukrainian. Let's not make a thing of it,”

The first twelve minutes of Biden's first address was spent discussing the invasion that began just days ago, adding that Russian President Vladimir Putin “badly miscalculated” the Ukrainian people.

“Six days ago, Russia’s Vladimir Putin sought to shake the foundations of the free world thinking he could make it bend to his menacing ways. But he badly miscalculated,” said Biden.

“He thought he could roll into Ukraine and the world would rollover. Instead, he met a wall of strength he never anticipated or imagined. He met the Ukrainian people.

“Throughout our history, we’ve learned this lesson when dictators do not pay a price for their aggression they cause more chaos.”

Lawmakers from both parties stood to applaud the president multiple times as he spoke about the Ukrainian people.

Biden declared that he, along with all members of Congress despite political difference was joined “with an unwavering resolve that freedom will always triumph over tyranny.”
