Workers in the area said police marksmen stormed the road after a gunshot was heard.

One woman, who didn't wish to be named, told the : “I was just in the manager’s office when we heard what sounded like a shot and then lots of shouting.

“We ran onto the roof and were told immediately to get back by police.

“There were about two cars and then suddenly another three turned up.

“We don’t really know what has happened but police said they think there is a gunman.

“All the shops are shut and the road has been taped off.”

Sommelier Pierre Mairesse, 30, was on his way from the shops when he saw a flood of police cars.

He told added: "The street was full of cops, they were all armed and there were sniffer dogs as well.

"I didn’t see what happened but the police said a firearm was involved.

“I wasn’t surprised to be honest, this area hasn’t got the best of reputations."
