HOUSEBUILDING firm Barratt Developments have helped bolster The Sun’s Ukraine Fund with a generous £50,000 donation.

Our big-hearted readers have already been donating in their droves since we launched our appeal in aid of the Red Cross last week.

The donation by the Barratt Foundation will go straight to the Red Cross, which is working inside Ukraine and at its borders to ease the suffering of those caught in the conflict.

Barratt chief executive David Thomas said: “We’ve all been affected by the distressing news from Ukraine.

"We welcome the Sun’s appeal and are happy to donate to support the vital work the Red Cross is doing easing suffering and helping families.”

Readers have been moved to donate by heart-wrenching pictures of women and children fleeing the horror.

Ukrainian Red Cross teams are providing shelter, food and water for those still trapped in bombed out towns and cities.

While workers with the International Committee of the Red Cross are striving to restore water supplies and give support to medical facilities.

More than one million refugees have fled Ukraine in the past week, according to United Nations figures. Officials fear that could hit four million in the biggest single movement of people since World War Two.

The world has watched harrowing scenes of families being broken up at border posts — not knowing if they will ever be reunited. The Red Cross has been working on the ground in Ukraine and surrounding countries every hour of every day since the crisis began.

Mike Adamson, chief executive of the British Red Cross, said: ‘We are amazed by the generosity of the Sun and Sun on Sunday readers.

"The speed and scale of the number of people forced to leave Ukraine over the last week highlights the immense humanitarian crisis that is unfolding in Europe."

The Ukraine Crisis Appeal will support people in areas currently affected and those potentially affected in the future by the crisis.

In the unlikely event that the British Red Cross raise more money than can be reasonably and efficiently spent, any surplus funds will be used to help them prepare for and respond to other humanitarian disasters anywhere in the world.
