PRITI'S PLEDGE

Thousands of Ukrainian refugees will be allowed into Britain, vows Priti Patel

PRITI PATEL has vowed to lay down the welcome mat for thousands of refugees fleeing war-torn Ukraine.

The Home Secretary is drawing up a scheme to fast-track applications for those in greatest need. And she called on people to act as guardian angels for those wishing to settle here by helping to make them feel at home.

But she warned she would not cut any corners on security.

It is feared Russian sympathisers will try to enter Britain posing as Ukrainians and Ms Patel wants all applications properly scrutinised.

She is working with Levelling Up supremo Michael Gove to set up a sponsorship scheme to grant thousands of visas to Ukrainians who don’t have a family in the UK.

They will be matched with families, businesses, community groups or local councils to act as sponsors and help find them a home and work.

Writing in The Sun on Sunday, Ms Patel said: “Our incredible country always does the right thing by those in need.”

Irish premier Micheal Martin said it was “very possible” that more than 20,000 refugees fleeing Ukraine could be accommodated in Ireland.

Northern Ireland minister Brandon Lewis will demand “clarity” on the issue.

A source said: “There are serious national security implications with taking this approach, waiving all visa requirements and the requisite checks. Brandon will be seeking further clarity from the Irish Government.”
