War hero who guarded Royals during The Blitz refused award because bravery happened ‘outside the borough’

95-year-old Eddie survived being shot in Burma while fighting the Japanese after Nazis surrendered

A WORLD War Two hero who guarded the Royals during The Blitz and helped liberate the Belsen death camp has been snubbed by a council.

Eddie Straight, 95, was also sent to fight the Japanese in Burma after the Nazis surrendered and survived being shot.

He was refused the Freedom of the Borough of Redcar and Cleveland because his gallantry came outside the borough.

Eddie, from Saltburn, North Yorks, was nominated by Craig Hornby, who has made a film about him.

Craig said: “I want a war hero to be honoured while he is still alive to appreciate it.”
