Jonathon Douglas-Hughes fell backwards over a bollard while wearing full uniform, as the royal couple arrived at Steward’s Academy.

Those gathered gasped as the dignitary landed on his back.

The prince rushed to the stricken pensioner’s aid while Kate watched on.

After the prince, a part-time pilot with the East Anglian Air Ambulance, had helped him back to his feet Mr Douglas-Hughes said: "Sorry about that."

William replied: "No, it's alright."

The Vice Lord Lieutenant, who has been awarded an OBE, recovered from his fall and was later seen sharing a joke with the Kate.

He was also able to escort the visitors around the school to promote Heads Together.

Will, Kate and Harry launched their campaign in May to encourage a positive national conversation about mental health problems.

On today’s visit the royal couple will talk to young people about how they are coping with life’s pressures.

They will join a lesson on “big change” run by students involved with the school’s mentor scheme.

After a trip to the classroom the royals will take their seats in a school assembly to hear speeches and watch performances from students on the topic of coping with change. The Duke will also make a short speech.

Later William and Kate will be introduced to a small number of parents to discuss how adults and carers can encourage pupils to talk about big changes in their lives.
