Viewers heard how he had leapt out of his police vehicle to tackle three thieves towing a stolen quadbike behind a Seat car.

As they sped off, PC Harper's legs became tangled in the tow rope attached to the back and he was dragged along the road.

The teens in the car - Henry Long, Jessie Cole and Albert Bowers - were later cleared by a jury of murder.

Instead, they were jailed for between 13 and 19 years for manslaughter.

As The Killing of PC Harper: A Widow’s Fight for Justice, aired on ITV tonight, one horrified viewer wrote on Twitter: "Can honestly say I hate those little t***s who murdered they deserve to be locked up forever."

Another said: "Watch the programme on ITV about the killing of PC Harper.

"The lads that killed him were a complete bunch of vile b****rds. Hope they rot in jail."

Someone else added: "What an absolute horrific way to be killed he went out on a night shift doing the job he trained for to be taken away from the job he loved.

"I hope the low lives are suffering with guilt every single day."

A fourth said: "Horrific. Senseless. Ruthless. Heartless. Loss of a genuinely lovely officer.

"PC Harper was worth his weight in gold to his wife Lissie. Wickedly taken away from her."

During the documentary, hosted by Sir Trevor McDonald, PC Harper's widow Lissie spoke of the devastating moment she was told her husband had died.

She said an officer came to her house late at night after Andrew failed to return from work.

And after realising the man stood at the door was not her husband, she knew something was wrong.

Lissie explained: “It was very late at night and I had a loud knock on the door thinking it was Andrew coming home and he had forgotten his key or something.

“But having looked down out of the window to see a police officer in uniform - that’s when I thought, well this isn’t right.

“He sat me down and very calmly said to me that Andrew had died.

“I just remember feeling like those words were the most alien thing to me."

She said a few minutes later, she was told “'We’ve got people in custody'".

Lissie added: “It was kind of a secondary sort of shock. Somebody has taken his life."

Many viewers said they were left in tears by Lissie's comments on the programme tonight.

Well-wishes also flooded in for the campaigner and her family.

Ever since her husband's death, Lissie has campaigned for a change in the law to save other families from the nightmare she has endured.
