Armitstead looked radiant as she arrived to marry Team Sky racer Philip Deignan in a lavish ceremony in her home town of Otley, West Yorkshire.

Crowds of well wishers had gathered outside a Victorian church for the wedding.

One well wisher said: "It's ironic Lizzie was late for her own wedding because of a slow cyclist holding up her coach."

The former Olympic silver medallist appeared to have put her dope test controversy and medal failure in Rio behind her as she beamed while leaving the church with her new husband.

Lizzie, 27, wore an elegant ivory wedding gown and was accompanied by flower girls and bridesmaids.

Irishman Philip, 33, smiled as well-wishers showered the couple with confetti as they left the church.

The couple were driven off in a 1932 Rolls Royce as more cyclists - unaware of who was inside - rode past.

Lizzie took fifth place in the women's road race at the Rio Olympics, following controversy over three missed drugs tests.
