'I COULD HAVE BEEN A JIHADI'

A SYRIAN migrant who travelled to Britain on a Ryanair flight using a bogus passport has claimed he sailed through five security checks.

Bashar Habib, 18, said he was given a passport by political activists and walked unchallenged through a series of security measures in Athens before claiming asylum on arrival at Stansted Airport.

Bashar was given the passport by No Borders - a network of groups who believe in free movement for all - less that 24 hours before he boarded a plane, thehas reported.

Bashar told the Mail on Sunday: “I’m a genuine person and want to be a doctor to help people in Syria – but I could have been a jihadi or a criminal.”

He claims he boarded a plane at Athens International Airport unchallenged on August 8, despite looking markedly different from the owner of the passport.

The Australian owner of the passport has longer hair, different coloured eyes and is seven years older.

Aboard the flight Bashar took celebratory selfies.

He said the passport had been “looked at five times in 20 seconds” but he was not stopped.

He added: “It was wonderful. Maybe it was help from God to give me the power to calm down.

“I am a good man and I told myself I deserve this. When I got on the plane I felt happiness but only in silence.”

Home Office documents seen by the Mail on Sunday reportedly show he was questioned on arrival and his nationality established by his Syrian identity card.

Chris Phillips, former head of the National Counter Terrorism Security Office, told the Mail on Sunday: "He could have been anyone. It raises the question: how many more people are coming in by this route?"

Conservative MP Charlie Elphicke branded the incident “extremely concerning”.

Bashar Habib had fled from Syria travelling through Turkey and Greece

Bashar was allegedly introduced to No Borders by a Syrian interpreter at a refugee camp near the Greek port city of Thessaloniki.

He had been at the camp for three months after fleeing his home in eastern Syria, which has been under attack from Islamic State for two years.

The home he shared with his four brothers was destroyed and Bashar claims he had been forced to witness the beheading of his best friend.

He told the Mail on Sunday he and his brothers bribed a military helicopter to fly them out before heading to Greece via Turkey.

After hearing his story No Borders offered him help him.

Bashar said: He told me "to memorise the details because on the journey people might ask me them and I needed to know them without checking the passport so as not to look suspicious.”

There is nothing to suggest the owner of the passport knew it was being used by the group.

Bashar insists he has never met the passport's owner.
