Angela Merkel’s party suffers humiliating losses in Germany’s regional elections as voters hit back at her mass immigration policy
Christian Democratic Union (CDU) polls its worst ever result in the Berlin state parliament elections
ANGELA Merkel’s party has suffered a raft of humiliating losses in Germany’s regional elections as voters hit back at her mass immigration policy.
Mrs Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) polled its worst ever result in the Berlin state parliament elections as Germans flock to far-right anti-immigration party, Alternative for Germany (AfD).
The party has won 13% of the vote which the CDU slipped five points to 18% of the vote.
The centre-left Social Democrats (SPU) are still the largest party polling 22%.
The vote comes two weeks after the CDU was beaten into third place in the eastern state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania by the AfD.
Germany’ is due to hold national elections.
Finance minister Markus Soeder from the Christian Social Union, called it the “second massive wake-up call” in two weeks.
“A long-term and massive loss in trust among traditional voters threatens the conservative bloc,” he told the Bild newspaper.
He called on the Chancellor’s coalition government to change course on immigration and cap the number of refugees entering the country to 200,000 per year.
A backlash against her migrant policy has raised questions about whether Merkel will stand for a fourth term.
She has repeatedly defended her immigration policy against critics, including the AfD.
