Malcolm, Wilbert and Barbara are among names chosen for UK storms next year

Forecasters have picked names from over 10,000 suggestions from the public - but only those thought to have the potential to cause a substantial impact will be named

STORMS hitting our shores in the coming year will be called Wilbert, Malcolm and Kamil.

They were winning entries in the second year of the Met Office’s “name our storms” contest with Ireland’s Met Eireann.

The forecasters had 10,000 nominations last year so the new batch, for 12 months from October, is picked from them.

The others are: Angus, Barbara, Conor, Doris, Ewan, Fleur, Gabriel, Holly, Ivor, Jacqui, Louise, Natalie, Oisin, Penelope, Robert, Susan, Thomas, Valerie.

Storm names cannot begin with Q, U, X, Y or Z in line with the naming conventions for hurricanes in the United States.
