'WHY ARE THE BRITISH SO UGLY AND STUPID?'

Google searches reveal what the world REALLY thinks of the British

THE biggest questions about Britain have been revealed - with some odd queries leaving Europeans scratching their heads.

The appetite for knowledge about Britain after the historic Brexit vote has peaked with a study using Google's autocomplete feature revealing Europeans are now curious as to why the Brits are "so ugly", "so dirty" and even "so stupid".

The research, conducted by the , found that those in the Netherlands were curious as to why "the British (are) so ugly".

Germans were the most likely to ask why British people are "so stupid" while the Poles wanted to know why British flour was so strange.

Portugal also didn't hold back in their queries, simply asking: "Why are the English crybabies?"

In a statement about the results, Search Laboratory said: "The biggest search story of the year in the UK has undoubtedly been Brexit.

"Users from all over the continent have been searching queries in the hundreds of thousands every month since February, regarding Britain's now impending exit from the European Union."

It said that search numbers had peaked around the time of the Brexit vote in June with almost 12.5 million searches.

But it found there was still an appetite from Europe to find out more about Britain in the following months with July seeing a similarly high number of searches.

Residents of Denmark asked why English judges were wigs.

Hungarians  wanted to know why the English put milk in their tea while the Italians asked "Why are the British dirty".

Search Laboratory tried to step in to answer some of the questions that have been keeping our European neighbours up at night.

The French call the English "rosbif" because of our tradition of cooking a joint of beef with vegetables.

While the term is technically an insult, most Brits wouldn't take it that way - as Search Laboratory says "who doesn't love a good roast?".

On to Germany who asked "why are the British so stupid".

There could be something to this one - while IQ levels across Western Europe are around the same level Germany does rank above the UK.

The Netherlands asked "why are the British so ugly".

Here Search Laboratory turned to a survey by MissTravel.com to hit back.

It found that only Australian and Italian men were ranked "sexier" than their British counterparts.

While only Brazil, Russia and Colombia ranked higher than British women.

Search Laboratory again tried to defend Brits as Italians asked "why are the British dirty" but quoting a  study, it admitted the UK is on the lower end of the spectrum when it comes to showers per week.

Portugal asked "why are the British crybabies" suggesting the stereotype of the stiff upper lip may not be alive and well.

But, global emotional awareness ratings suggest the Potuguese are more emotional than Brits.

In response to Denmark's question "why do English judges wear wigs" there are a few explanations.

It may be because law courts copied court dress or that they were designed to give judges anonymity.

Sweden asked "why has England got two flags".

It doesn't. The English flag is the St George's cross, the Union Jack relates to the whole of Britain.

Finland's residents were confused about why we're called Britain in the Olympics.

Search Laboratory explained that while Britain technically only refers to England, Scotland and Wales, Team GB is actually short for Great Britain and Northern Ireland Olympic Team.

There are several responses to Hungary's query about why Brits put milk in their tea.

Possibly because it tastes better or because of the strong strains of tea used in the UK or even because in times gone by tea drinkers wanted to cool their beverages to ensure they didn't crack china.

In Poland people turned to Google to ask "why is British flour so strange".

British flour, and because of this British bread, is very different to Polish varieties.

Search Laboratory also had a look at what Brits have been asking about their European neighbours.

It found that most queries had a romantic angle - common searches were "what do French men like" and "Italian men in bed".
