"It's a mystery," said an NYPD official. "Now it's a question of piecing together everything she did that night.

During Gaal's, 51, final hours Friday night, she had gone out with friends. Authorities are combing through video and pulling receipts from the places she went to.

"[Then] around 4:30am [Saturday], you see somebody rolling this [duffle bag] down the sidewalk from multiple cameras," said the official.

"[Cops] actually traced it backward from the scene to the house," they said, describing the blood trail from the bag where Gaal was found. According to authorities, the woman knew the people she was hanging out with and they are currently being interviewed.

"We also have to figure out, did she meet some mysterious stranger along the way?"

Gaal's body was discovered less than a mile away from her Forest Hills home by a dog walker around 8am Saturday. Her neighbors were shocked by the level of violence.

"I saw her [Friday] in her back yard," John Blankson told . Blankson lives next door to Gaal and her family.

"We share a common backyard with [her] dog," he said, referring to the pooch Gall posted multiple photos of on

"[Saturday] morning, we were like, 'Why can't we hear the dog this morning?' It's super shocking," he said.

Surveillance footage from the area showed "an unknown individual" dragging a wheeled duffel bag from the direction of the woman's home.

About four and a half hours later, Gaal's body was discovered inside the bag and police were able to follow the blood trail to the side door of her home.

Howard Klein, Gaal's husband, was reportedly in Portland on a college hunt with their 17-year-old-son at the time of her death, according to posts on social media.
