The attack was said to have taken place in his home and involved someone in his family.

He was later charged with battery and top brass are now considering whether he should also face a court martial.

Col Ellwood is stationed in Canada where he is in charge of the huge British Army Training Unit Suffield, which hosts live fire exercises. UK troops have used it since 1972.

He lives with his family in the small town of Cardiff in the province of Alberta.

An Army source told The Sun: “He has allegedly attacked someone in his family at home.

“Efforts have been made to sweep this under the carpet.”

The married dad and Afghanistan veteran was made an MBE for services to the Army.

He had been overseeing major changes as the Army relocates from Canada to the Middle East.

An Army spokesman refused to say if he had been suspended.

He said: “We can confirm on 7 March, Col Mark Ellwood was charged with battery pending further investigation.

"It would be inappropriate to comment further.

“There is no place for inappropriate behaviour in the British Army and any allegations are investigated thoroughly.”
