A horrified mum has said a brave security guard tried to split the teenagers up as violence flared on the London-bound platform.

She said: "I saw liquid being thrown, I was standing at the card machine when it kicked off.

"The boys on platform ran back and the others ran off so I walked across road and continued watching... saw more liquid thrown and a glass bottle.

British Transport Police (BTP) partially sealed off the station after the attack at 5.10pm on Thursday.

They tweeted: "Reports of a large group fight and a bottle with an unknown toxic liquid being thrown in the station."

BTP has since confirmed the liquid was not acid.

A spokesman said: "British Transport Police officers were called to Grays rail station following reports of a fight.

"The call came into police at 5.24pm on Thursday, 23 September.

"Colleagues from Essex Police attended the scene and found a glass liquid container smashed on the floor outside the station.

"Officers examined the contents of the container and concluded that this was not suspicious.

"A member of staff had been taken to hospital after feeling unwell.

"He was later discharged as it was determined that this was unconnected to the liquid container.

Shocked locals took to Twitter to express their outrage.
