Terrified parent forced into drastic action after rodents overrun home in Hornchurch, Essex

The desperate mother-of-two, who does not want to be named, lives above a row of popular fast food joints and restaurants in the High Street at Hornchurch, Essex.

She said: “I feel absolutely disgusting.

“I feel my house is dirty and I don’t know where to start cleaning.

“You can see the rats running along the road.

“They even run up the stairs – they’re not scared of us at all.”

In another astonishing clip the mum films the rats climbing up steps from the street to her flat in broad daylight.

She added: “I won’t even open my windows any more since I found a big fat rat sitting on my window sill.

And she said her two lads, aged six and 10, have gone to stay with their grandmother locally because they’re frightened stiff they’ll get attacked.

“My sons are scared because they heard something in the corner of their room one day,” she said.

“They could be in their toy box or under the bed.

“It’s too horrible to even think about so they’ve gone to their gran’s for now.”

The woman’s landlord agreed to put down poison in a bid to kill the rodents.

Havering Council’s environmental health team is now working with local restaurant bosses in an attempt to end the fast-growing health and safety menace.

Council chiefs have also drafted in a pest control contractor to tackle the crisis.

Businesses have agreed to keep all their waste bins clean and covered.

And the council’s team has ensured bin areas are being kept clear of food.

Food outlets will also ensure that all holes and points of entry to their premises are sealed or filled.
