U2’s Bono and The Edge perform surprise concert in Kyiv metro in support of Ukraine amid Russian bombardment

U2 BANDMATES Bono and The Edge performed a surprise concert today in Kyiv metro in a show of solidarity with Ukraine.

The music icon praised Ukraine's fight for freedom against the Russian invasion during his performance in downtown Kyiv.

61-year-old belted out classics such as "Sunday Bloody Sunday", "Desire" and "With or without you".

The U2 star performed alongside the band's guitarist "The Edge" to a small crowd of fans including fatigue-clad members of Ukraine's armed forces, back from the frontline with Russian troops.

Majestic purple lights turned the metro into a makeshift arena as Bono did his best to lift spirits.

In a speech during the break, he said: "The people in Ukraine are not just fighting for your own freedom, you are fighting for all of us who love freedom.

The iconic rock star is a long time humanitarian and has frequently lent his voice to a variety of causes including the fight against poverty and AIDS.

His performance came as air raid sirens echoed in the Ukrainian capital with fighting raging on in the east.

At one point, Bono invited a Ukrainian soldier to sing along who called on the world's support for the embattled country as they covered "Stand by me".

"It's some good emotions, that's all," said a member of the Ukrainian territorial forces in the audience.

"It's a strange feeling, like being a child going to first grade," said Olesia Bezsmertna, a 36-year-old university lecturer, ahead of the show.

Ukrainians are still standing firm against Russia despite the Kremlin causing widespread devastation and death.

However, it has not all been plain sailing for Putin who has lost an estimated 25,000 troops.

There have also been reports that the humiliated Russian president is running out of missiles trying to defeat Ukraine.

Putin paraded his nuclear weapons yesterday in a rehearsal for the annual Victory Day parade which takes place tomorrow.

Ukraine has warned about an "escalation of attacks" ahead of the parade.

Yevhen Yenin, Ukraine’s first deputy interior minister, said: “These symbolic dates are to the Russian aggressor like red to a bull."
