The UK is expecting an early summer heatwave for the next five days as a North African blast sweeps hot weather in.

The country will sizzle in the heat on the lead up to the weekend, possibly breaking the record for the hottest May in 100 years.

The current record is 27.8C which was recorded in Camden, North London on May 16, 1925.

The South is forecast to be mostly dry with spells of sunshine all week, but Saturday will be a scorcher.

The hot spell will bring warm winds and dazzling sunshine throughout the UK.

Most areas will remain largely dry and fine, but the heat does bring a risk of showers especially in the West.

Brits celebrated the warm weather last weekend by flocking to beaches, parks and pub gardens.

Londoners took advantage of the capital’s green parks in the sunshine while Bournemouth and Brighton were packed with sunseekers soaking up some rays.

Jim Dale, meteorologist for British Weather Services, said the UK could see temperatures in the high 20s in the middle of this month when a blast of North African heat arrives via Italy and France.

Dale told the : "The near continent is getting hot and we're getting a little bit of that warmth into London that will give us the warmest day of the year so far next week."

He added: "When we get to Wednesday, [we could see] 25 degrees in London. It continues into the following days."
