Ninth annual Sun Military Awards to honour heroic UK armed forces’ best and bravest
We call on our army of loyal readers to nominate the most deserving servicemen, women and units, as well as those who support them
THE Millies are back to salute another year of heroic service by the best armed forces in the world... our own.
Now in their ninth year, the annual Sun Military Awards, in association with BAE Systems, will again single out the very bravest and best from the Army, Royal Air Force and Royal Navy.
For the past 12 months they have gone above and beyond the call of duty in the some of the world’s most perilous hotspots to keep Britain safe and aid those in need.
NOMINATIONS HAVE NOW CLOSED
Today we call on our army of loyal readers to nominate the most deserving servicemen, women and units, as well as those who support them.
To reflect the changing face of our Armed Forces, the Millies have changed too, with new awards to recognise new heroes.
For the first time, a Millie will be awarded to a Forces star who inspires others through their example.
And an Innovation Award will single out the firm or individual behind a life-saving or battle-winning bit of kit.
Air Chief Marshal Sir Stuart Peach — new Chief of the Defence Staff and head of the British Armed Forces — today calls on our readers to get nominating.
In an open letter to Sun readers, Britain’s top officer said: “This year’s Millies will once again recognise the outstanding achievements of our Armed Forces as they continue to face new threats and tackle formidable challenges.
“The last year has been no exception. Over the past 12 months we’ve seen our servicemen and women prove exactly why we have the best Armed Forces in the world.
“Our commitment to our people and British interests means our outlook has been and will continue to be truly global.
“This year our Armed Forces have taken part in over 20 operations in more than 25 countries.
“We face an uncertain world, with different threats to our way of life.
“But what we can be certain of is the dedication to duty and professionalism of our Armed Forces.
“I remain grateful for such steadfast support from those we serve and the Millies are an excellent way of recognising these endeavours.
“From reservists to regulars, from heroes at home to heroes abroad, to those who innovate, inspire others and to those who overcome the odds to achieve greatness, this is your chance to nominate the servicemen and women who have touched your lives.”
The new categories include two Hero At Home Millies, one for an individual and one for a unit.
There will also be Hero Overseas gongs, while returning favourites include Best Reservist, Support To The Armed Forces and Overcoming Adversity.
