Betty was murdered on June 13, 1980, later that month Candy was arrested and charged with her murder.
Candy admitted during trial to murdering her friend Betty Gore.
After admitting that she murdered Betty in an act of self-defense, Candy was acquitted of all of the charges stemming from Betty's murder.
Betty and her family were neighbors of Candy and Pat Montgomery.

On April 27, 2023, HBO released a limited series detailing the true story of Betty's death.
